Atlantis brings back Access-Samples

Space Shuttle Atlantis safely brings back first samples from Access processed aboard the International Space Station ISS.

The Material Science Laboratory MSL has become operative in November 2009. Among the first experiments carried out were the solidification experiments on metallic alloys from Access. The experiments are part of the Microgravity Application Program MAP from the European Space Agency ESA. The focus is the columnar to equiaxed transition in grain growth and the effect of the melt flow on the microstructure evolution under diffusive conditions in aluminium alloys AlSi7 and AlSi7Fe1. The samples are to arrive at the Access labs from NASA within a few weeks and shall then be analysed.
